Communitech's Iain Klugman visits our Centre For Family Business ["CFFB"]

by Rick Baker
On Dec 13, 2011

"Family business is intertwined with our community."

That's one of the first things Iain Klugman, Communitech's CEO, said when he spoke at CFFB's October breakfast. He talked about the strong legacy of family business success in our community. We enjoyed hearing about how our community showed entrepreneurship from the outset...being off the major trade routes - that's how it all got started.

For many of our members, this was their first visit to the downtown-Kitchener 'Communitech Hub'...and they enjoyed the morning. Terrific venue, a great tour of the facilities, and the opportunity to be updated about our vibrant tech community....a key part of the  entrepreneurship cluster that makes Waterloo Region such a special place.

Iain explained, "Communitech helps tech companies start, grow, and succeed". And he added, "Homegrown economies are made more durable over time" and "This community has a strong history of bootstrapping".

Some Communitech facts:

  • A National mandate...the plan is to be in every major community in Canada
  • A broad mandate...not just helping tech companies, also helping schools
  • An advocate for our community...recently opened an office in Ottawa
  • A champion for digital media...raised $107Million over the last 3 years
  • Currently house 40 companies and help 400 companies
  • Serve as a mentor for other communities: Niagara and Guelph, are examples
What has Communitech learned?

Iain's answer, Communitech has learned the most-important things are:
  • Intentionality,
  • Hard Work,
  • Pulling Together,
  • Thinking Big, and
  • Being Relevant and Valuable to the Customer
[Great lessons and great advice.]

In closing, Iain answered the question,

How can family businesses get involved?

His advice to family business was: do the best you can do at your business and get involved in community events.

Thank you, Iain!

4 Good Samaritans at Waterloo

by Rick Baker
On Sep 9, 2010
Late on Friday afternoon, with all of us heading into the last long-weekend of summer… what are the odds of witnessing the work of a Good Samaritan?

Much higher than one might expect…if one is fortunate enough to live in our community.

I had finished a meeting on the afternoon of September 3rd and my watch said 4 o’clock. I thought about calling it a week and heading home but decided to clean up some paperwork at the office. I turned off King Street on to Weber Street, in Waterloo. In front of the Faith Life building, my lane was partially blocked by a woman trying to push her car to the side of the road. I squeezed past her, almost touching the curb because there wasn’t much room. I could see a couple of people running from the Faith Life laneway…it looked like they were coming to help the lady out. I decided to go past and do a U-turn so I could come up behind the lady…to block traffic so no one would accidentally hit her or the people who were helping her.

By the time I had driven up behind to block traffic the lady was inside steering and 4 people were pushing her car to a safe spot.

I pulled out my BlackBerry and took the following picture:

We traded business cards and I exchanged email with 2 of these Good Samaritans.

Here is a picture of those two Good Samaritans, the Ackermans, taken while they were on vacation in New Zealand.

If you know Dan or Bethany…give them a pat on the back for the nice thing they did for a lady in distress on a busy Friday afternoon.
